This week the children have been investigating length.
They had to make ramps to see which vehicle had travelled the furthest and decide how to measure and record their findings.

We have been enjoying all things Lowry these last couple of weeks. The children have used viewfinders to find their favourite parts of the pictures and enlarged them. This week they have added colour using oil pastels and watercolours.

We have had a busy week this week! First we did our Science experiment. We wanted to see if solids could change to liquids. We tested this by having a range of solids and heating them up. We found out that some of them had melting points and therefore changed state and the others stayed as a solid. Squirrels loved this!
We also looked into our new RE topic of Judaism. We had a look in atlases to find Israel and then we learnt about how Judaism began.

At the start of the week we looked at the map of the world, using an atlas to locate countries that support Fairtrade. It has been great that the children have been looking out for the Fairtrade logo on their food packaging too.
In Maths this week, we have been practising our skills in Multiplication and Division.
We were lucky enough to be able to join another draw along with the author of the Tom Gates books.
In RE we were thinking about the Easter story. We sequenced the events in a comic strip, then some of us shared this work in the church service on Thursday.

In Maths this week we have been revisiting addition and subtraction to ensure we are confident in completing these calculations. We have enjoyed playing a place value game and been working on our times tables too.

In DT we designed lighthouse pictures. Then with a partner we created lighthouse pictures and were able to light up the lighthouse!

We have continued to read the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory together.
At the beginning of the week the children discussed their favourite chocolate bars! They then chose adjectives to describe it and used them in a description of their chocolate choice!
In Music this week, we worked in pairs to research information about the famous composer Mozart. Later on in the week we used the information found to create a fact file.
We enjoyed shared reading with our friends in Badgers.
The highlight of our week was joining for a virtual session with the presenter and author Dermot O'Leary!
He talked about his writing and his Toto the Ninja Cat series of books. The children also had a chance to take part in a draw along with the book's illustrator Nick East. They were thrilled to receive a copy of his latest book at the end of the session!

We started the week by getting thank you letters written and typed up to the Harwich Society.
We have been busy practising this week's spellings, some of us had Phonics practise and a group of us worked on our dictionary skills too.
In DT (Design and Technology) we experimented making paper circuits making electrical connections using LEDs, switches, batteries and copper tape.

Well done Squirrel Class, a great start back to the new half term.
We have enjoyed finishing our class reader this week - George's Marvellous Medicine. The children did an amazing job at retelling the story in their own words. They were very pleased with their efforts. We also looked some of the different book covers used for the story, and then designed our own.
We worked hard on our new set of spellings this week!
In Music this week, the children had fun working on body percussion.

We had a busy final week of the half term and are definitely ready for a rest!
In Maths this week, we continued are work on Fractions. Some of us also had a chance to play a times tables revision game with Mr Munson, called Mathopoly!
We loved having Badgers visit us this week. They were collecting data for their Maths work and we were more than happy to help!
In PE with our sports coach this week, we worked well in teams playing Dodgeball.

We have continued to enjoy the story of George's Marvellous Medicine. We enjoyed writing our own recipe for a marvellous medicine with a set of instructions.
In Maths this week, we have started working on Fractions.
We continued working well on our Music with Mr Munson.
Our sports coach has started to choose two children each week, who have stood out for their efforts and achievements in his PE lesson. Our medal winners in PE this week.

We have made a great start with our class reader this week - George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl.
Following on from our research, we each wrote up a fact file about the author.
We read the start of the book and found out about George's Grandma who we weren't too keen on! The children searched for descriptive language that Roald Dahl had used to describe her in the story. We then write our own super descriptions of Grandma and shared them with each other.
In Maths, we have been working on different activities that include measurement, perimeter and area. We have also enjoyed exploring shape on the chrome books too.
In Science we were thinking more about electricity, and experimented making circuits using buzzers and bulbs.

A busy week with lots of different challenges in the Squirrel Class. The children have been busy researching the author Roald Dahl, ready to create a fact file next week.
Continuing on from our assembly discussions, the children practised more origami which is becoming very popular! They also considered the things they feel grateful for and recorded them on a flower.
The class did a great job at finishing their Toto the Ninja Cat adventure stories this week. They also tried hard when re-reading their writing to edit and check it too.
In French we were working on simple greetings to see which we could remember.
In Music this week, Mr Munson worked with the children using glockenspiels and chime bars. They learnt how to play parts of the song - Frere Jacques.

We are all happy to be back together and the Spring term is under way already!
In Maths, we enjoyed playing a place value dice game with a partner to see who get the highest number. In our main sessions we have been seeing what we can remember from our Multiplication work before Christmas!
We have made a good start back, learning our new sets of spelling words.
We have written pledges to suggest ways we might be able to help reduce climate change. We have written these on recycled paper in leaf shapes to create part of a display.

Christmas Art!
We enjoyed creating a Christmas Bethlehem scene linked to one our songs, ready for display in the hall. We did this in stages which then resulted in the creation of our beautiful pictures.

A really busy week for Squirrel class this week, so not so many photos to share! Christmas has begun, so we have been busy learning new songs with the Muntjacs.
In our Maths sessions, we have started working on Multiplication. We have been practising calculations, finding the missing number in calculations, playing Multiplication games and counting in different multiples.
In Science we continued with our focus on electricity and thinking about appliances used at home. In PE the children continued to build on their hockey skills with our sports coach.

In assembly this week the children were thinking about anti-bullying week. When back in the classroom, we thought about the theme of using one kind word. We made a brilliant display of this!
The children were also able to enjoy an activity together, where they gave compliments to each other.
In Geography we followed a set of instructions, to create our own 'Ring of Fire' booklets. We used the chrome books to add to the cool facts in it!
Each week we work on a new set of spellings. Don't forget to practise them at home too!

In History we are studying the Iron Age. We found out about the hill forts built during that time.
In Maths, we have been working on addition and are now working on subtraction.
In PE with our coach, we started learning Hockey skills.

In French this week we have been practising some more french greetings. We have been learning to ask each other "How are you?" and learning to reply too.
In Geography, we have been learning about volcanoes. The children worked in pairs to look up some volcano vocabulary in the dictionary.
We were learning about the states of a volcano and that they could be active, dormant or extinct.

In PE this week we were working on ball skills and working co-operatively. We are learning to listen more carefully to the instructions so we can correctly follow the task set.
In RE we read and discussed the story of Creation from the Bible. The children then retold the story in pictures and words.
In Maths we have been working on different methods to add numbers together. We have also enjoyed using different addition games on the Chrome books too.
We started learning about the Iron Age in History this week. We completed research together on the Chrome books to create a fact file.

A good week in the Squirrel class with lots of busy learning happening, including lots of amazing reading.
Marvellous Maths thinking, whilst working on addition this week.
The children were thinking about the impact earthquakes have on a community. They considered being in that situation, and wrote a diary entry to explain how they might have felt. I was so impressed with the effort made by everyone and their carefully completed pieces of writing.
We really enjoyed our design challenge this week!
Using spaghetti and marshmellows we had to create an earthquake proof structure. We worked brilliantly in pairs to try and come up with the most secure design. We tested them by shaking the table to see if they remained strong!

The highlight of our week was having our families join us in Squirrel Class for our open morning. Thank you for all your support in joining us, the children loved having you with us. The children did amazingly playing their recorders too, with guidance from Mr Munson.
In Geography we continued to think about earthquakes. The children thought about the sequence of events when an earthquake occurs and the devastating impact it can have on communities. They designed a poster with advice to help be prepared in case of an earthquake.
We had to start thinking about Christmas, eek! We've designed our cards for you to see. These are in our book bags and need to be returned to school this week if you would like to place an order!

We have had a good week in the Squirrel class. In Geography we have been learning all about earthquakes. Ask your Squirrel what interesting facts they can recall!
We have continued working on place value in Maths. We have been practising writing numbers in words, partitioning numbers, calculating 10 more/10 less and 100 more/100 less and solving place value problems.
In our PE with Mrs Morena we were doing gymnastics. We were doing point and patch balances and tried to hold each balance tight for 3 seconds, keeping our arms and legs pointed.

We have continued getting to know each other, learning to work and have fun together too!
In RE we started our work on Creation by thinking about the world around us. We went outside to look for wow factors in nature and listen out for what sounds we could hear.
We had our first official times tables session in Squirrel class this week! The children enjoyed time to practise in the morning before the session, they did really well.
The children continued with their recorders this week in Music and enjoyed playing a little more.

W/C 6th September 2021.... We are back!
We have had a great start back to school with the new school year starting well, and the new year 3s doing an amazing job too. The children have settled back in well together and have been learning the routines and expectations for a Squirrel.
The children have been busy on different Maths tasks each day, getting stuck into learning their times tables too.
We had our first Music lesson of the year with Mr Munson where we got to use the recorders.
We enjoyed reading the First News together.
We enjoyed our first PE lesson in the sunshine with the sports coach.
All in all a really successful first week, well done Squirrel Class!

Sports Day 15th July 2021
Squirrel Class enjoyed their races at Sports day. This year they competed against their classmates in a hoop race, a running race and a class relay race. Brilliant effort and sporting attitudes were shown, encouraging each other throughout. Great job Squirrels!

In Maths we continued our work on angles...
We were lucky enough this week to join a live on-line session with the author and illustrator of the Tom Gates books - Liz Pichon. She talked about being an author and shared exciting snippets from her latest book - Shoe Wars. The children were also able to draw along with her too!
But the highlight of our week was...
our visit to West Stow Anglo Saxon Village.
We had a brilliant day, with our guide describing the Squirrel class as awesome!

We have continued to think lots about the Romans in our History learning this week. The week started with looking at images of Roman artefacts and guessing what they might have been. We also created mosaic patterns of our own and learned more about how Roman roads were formed.
We started to prepare for writing a story with a Roman theme! We had to create our main character and plan out the story which would take place in a Roman setting.
In Maths we enjoyed measuring out the perimeter of rooms in a Roman villa. Later in the week we started to learn about and revisit work on angles.

In Maths this week, we did a money challenge, worked on multiplication and division word problems to test our calculation skills and started on some 2D shape work.
We used some Roman artefacts for observational drawing. The children took care to look carefully at what they could see to produce some great pictures.
A couple of great examples here of our writing when looking at examples of Roman architecture.

It was great to see each other again and we enjoyed sharing our half term news with each other! It has been great to have the sunshine with us too.
In English we continued reading our class book - Stig of the Dump. Amazing reading by lots of the Squirrel class. It has been lovely to see their confidence to read aloud to the rest of the class grow. The children were also great at spotting alternative words the author had used for the word - said.
Thank you to this Squirrel for sharing his amazing poster of a Roman palace with us, that he had got during the half term.
In Maths we have been working really hard on Division. We have done this practically, by drawing, on a number line and using formal methods as well. We enjoyed using some Division games on the Chrome books to practise our Division skills and knowledge too.
W/C 24th May 2021
A great final week of the half term this week.
We have been finding out about the city of Rome in Italy. The children started by researching information using the Chrome books. We spent another session organising those facts and putting them into sentences. Finally we enjoyed using these to create a leaflet advertising Rome. We all ended up wanting to have a visit there!
We enjoyed learning colours in French this week.
The children were really excited to see this snake skin that one of our Squirrels brought in, and the class asked lots of great questions!
We finished off our Multiplication work this week. Lots of were learning to multiply 2 or 3 digit numbers by a 1 digit number. We started off by doing this practically, then by using partitioning and then using the short formal method of Multiplication.

We have kept up the pace this week with lots of great learning! Well done Squirrel Class.
In History, we discussed the possible reasons the Roman Empire may have considered when planning to invade Britain! The children also shared their thoughts on whether as a tribesperson in Britain at that time, would they have surrendered or put up a fight!
We have used the Chrome books this week to find out more about the city of Rome. There was lots of great partner work and note taking from everyone. We found some great facts, including that there is a museum in Rome entirely dedicated to pasta!
On Friday Squirrel Class looked at collage by Megan Coyle with Mrs Morena. They looked carefully at how she layers her colours and textures, and cut shapes to match pattern, shadow and light. After a mini task, where they mixed animals up with different habitats, they took a closer look at the backgrounds she uses.
The children chose their favourite collage of Megan's to recreate. These were all works of Art to be proud of. The children improved as they worked by adding extra layers of shapes and carefully selecting colours.
I think you'll agree, they look amazing!
We enjoyed some competitive place value games to see who could create the lowest number. Then we worked out the difference between our scores too.
In our Maths lesson we continued our work on Multiplication.

A busy week in Squirrel Class, well done for all the continued hard work going on. Our History display about the Roman Army was finished which we are very proud of! You can see examples of some of the activities we have worked on.
In History this week we imagined that we were spies in the Year 50BC, checking out what Britain was like for the Romans before they invaded. We all made a Roman spy booklet and filled it with the information we found out. By telling the Roman generals, they would know what to expect when preparing for invasion!

In our Maths lessons this week we have been working on Multiplication. We practised counting in equal groups and using arrays. Some of us also worked on Multiplying by 10 and 100.
Squirrel Class continued to work on their French skills. They have been counting to 20 and practising their greeting with each other too!
Some of us helped to transfer the peas and beans that we had planted, to outside.

Despite having a bank holiday this week, we still squeezed lots of different things in!
The children enjoyed planning and designing their own stamp for the big Royal Mail Heroes Stamp Competition. After finding out about the challenge and watching a video from the Prime Minister the children were keen to enter. Everyone was determined to have a try at getting their design chosen for a new stamp series and of course win a cash prize!!
As part of our Maths this week, we have been practising rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and sometimes 1,000! We used the game Rocket Rounding on our Chrome books to practise.
We also continued to work on our times tables, trying different ways to help us learn them.
We have been preparing work to go on our History display. We will show you once it is all finished!
We've enjoyed the sunshine and playing together at break.
We have continued to keep an eye on the vegetables we have been growing! They should be ready to replant outside soon.

We have had a very productive week!
As part of our History learning we discovered how the Roman Empire grew and found out about life in the Roman army. As Roman citizens we wrote letters to apply for a job as a soldier!
In English we made a start on our new class reader - Stig of the Dump by Clive King. We enjoyed the start of this new story and there was lots of superb reading from Squirrels.
In RE we are learning about the Sikh religion. The children found out about the 5ks that are important to Sikhs and what they represent. Ask your Squirrel to see if they can remember all five!
In Maths we have focused on Place Value this week.
We have been counting in different multiples, ordering and comparing numbers, positioning numbers on number lines and rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. These are important skills to be confident in when working on lots of different Maths activities.

We had a great week and enjoyed the glorious sunshine when we were outside. In class we started on our History learning about the Romans and in Maths we worked out how to calculate the change when shopping.
We worked hard in our PE sessions this week.
The class were thrilled to receive some lovely gifts from a Squirrel Class family this week. The basketball has been a big hit and the games will be brilliant for wet play times, thank you so much.

We have had a great week back after the Easter holidays and were happy to be back together again.
In Maths we have been working on Money, looking at different ways to add amounts of money. It was great to also use our Chrome books for some money challenges. As always we have continued to practise times tables too!
In History we have started to find out about Ancient Rome and the era of the Romans. We then looked at where Rome was located on the map, and then tested our knowledge of where other countries were located too.
We were excited to make a start on French this week and were enjoyed saying simple greeting to each other in French!

We have had a great final week before the Easter break...
In English we were looking at the different ways authors started and ended stories. We looked at examples from our class book collection and shared them with each other.
We all had the opportunity to plant peas or beans that we will be tending to over the Easter break.
In Science we tried out a forces experiment. After a few failed attempts, we were successful! We then wrote up what we had done, and what we found out back in the classroom.

We have enjoyed testing out our new class Chrome books! We enjoyed reading the latest copy of First News and playing Hit the Button to practise our times tables.
We have been lucky to enjoy several class sessions with Jane this week. We have thought carefully about co-operation, working together and supporting each other. We also have considered ways to help us be calm in different situations.
In RE we were starting to think about the Easter story. We followed instructions from assembly to make a cross from paper. Two of our Year 4s instructed and supported the rest of the class in how to make them.
We are back on our mission to develop our confidence learning our times tables and division facts. Here we are, hard at it!

Squirrel class have had a great start back in school. We were so chuffed to be back together again! We really enjoyed taking each other's measurements and recording them as part of our Maths learning.
